about

Just about half a century ago, five, English, middle-class, white boys formed a band.
Being middle-class and white, we drew our lyrical influences from the comfortable surroundings of Ealing and all points West on the Central and Piccadilly Lines.
For musical influences we absorbed the sounds of the BBC Light Programme, The Goons, Radio Luxembourg, Kurt Weill, Ewan McColl, The Beatles, The Stones, The Kinks, The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and many more.
It didn’t work.
It was a musical and lyrical nonsense that faced up to the financial machinations of the music business with about as much courage as five, English, middle-class white boys.
“Fuck that”, we thought, fifty years later, and started work on the idea of “Songs from Suburbia”, again.
Songs that reflected our lives, then and now, without the brutal restrictions of some smooth-talking, corporate air-head sitting at the back of the control room.
This is the result. From the heart. We couldn’t care less. Really. All we care about is the music.
Nowadays we draw influences from everywhere, from the West Coast Sound to Coldplay, from Classical music to Bon Iver, and from pure rock to pure folk.
Every song here began its life as a voice and guitar composition. There are two songs from the Folk Revival. There are five brand new songs, each drawing from the rock, pop and folk genres. The remaining songs are all from the band’s repertoire long ago; some are virtually as we performed them then; some have a modern twist - we are all grown up now.

about

GNOME SWEET GNOME Epsom, UK

Originally formed in 1969 by Ealing Art School students Nick Ellis and Brendan Read-Jones.

From their folk roots, the band eased gently into electric rock while remaining true to its origins. Joined by drummer John Blandford, guitarist Dick Holder and bassist Rick Cassman, the band evolved its raison d’etre, Songs From Suburbia, with finely-crafted vignettes of everyday life.
